This DIY has been a long time coming. I'm developing a mini obsession with finding new ways to repurpose Oui yogurt jars. I mean- look at them! They're like a crafters dream come true! A few months ago I made DIY faux succulents with some extra jars and I've loved the added greenery they've added to my home decor.
And as I mentioned in my previous Oui jar craft, I don't eat yogurt. I actually really don't like yogurt at all. But thankfully my momdoes and she saves all the jars for me. (I know, my mom is the best) So every few months when we head back to Maine for a visit I snag a few jars to use for a good ol' DIY project.
Anyway, it turns out that the Oui yogurt jars are the perfect size for storage in my medicine cabinet. Sean and I have been moving around so much recently that it's hard for me to have consistently in my bathroom storage. There's just no way to determine what the next apartment will look like and we typically don't have a ton of time to be super picky. And we tend to pack light to make it easier. So easy origination is amust and I typically end up winging it with a cute little DIY project!
After using the undecorated Oui jars in my medicine cabinet to store my Q-tips, cotton balls and hair elastics I decided that the plain glass jars were justtoo boring.
I found a blog post via Pinterest a while ago about how to dye mason jars and thought that this would be the perfect way to jazz up these Oui yogurt jars! Nothing fancy, no ribbons, just pretty colors.
This Oui yogurt jar craft is actually pretty easy but also pretty time-consuming. It's a lot of waiting around, but the payoff is great! I'm in love with how these turned out! And you don't have to limit yourself to using them for bathroom storage as I did, they would be awesome to create a little faux floral arrangement in too!
Step-by-step guide: How to color Oui yogurt jars
Step One: Clean Your Jars and Collect Supplies
Despite what the graphic above says the first step is to remove the labels and sticky residue from your Oui yogurt jars. I soak the label itself off in hot water and then remove the sticky residue using baking soda and coconut oil. First, rub coconut oil all over the jar. Then sprinkle on some baking soda and scrub the jar using a damp sponge. Rinse the baking soda off and dry your jars completely.
As for the rest of your supplies, you'll need:
– Mod Podge (I used one with a luster finish)
– Food coloring
– A cookie sheet (or something large to bake on)
– Aluminum foil and paper towels
– Something to mix your color with (like a toothpick or popsicle stick)
Step Two: Mix Your Colors
I poured about 1 1/2 tablespoons of Mod Podge in each of my clean, dry jars. I wanted my jars to be shades of blue to match my decor. This part was really trial and error for me, but I found that jars that I added 8+ drops of color to came out way better. For all my oui jars I used mostly blue with a few drops of green to give more of a teal look to each jar.
Use a small stick to mix your color right in the jar. I didn't have a toothpick (or popsicle stick) so I ended up using one of those little picks you use to pick a lobster. It worked fine, but I would have rather used a popsicle stick.
Step Three: Swirl and Let Sit
After your color is completely mixed, swirl it around until it covers the jar completely. It's easier (and better for clean up!) to do this step over a trashcan. I had a ton of the Mod Podge come out while I was trying to coat the opening of the jar completely.
Next, set the jars upside-down on a doubled-up paper towel to allow the excess Mod Podge to run off. Let your jars sit like this for at least an hour. I didn't have any issues with paper towel sicking to my jars, but if you're worried you could use waxed paper instead.
Step 4: Bake!
After an hour has passed tip your jars upright and set them on a cookie sheet. Bake them in a preheated oven at 215ยบ for 1 hour. After an hour has past check your jars to ensure that the color is no longer milky before taking them out of the oven.
Final Steps
After you take your colored Oui yogurt jars out of the oven, let them sit on the cookie sheet until they are completely cool (about 45 minutes for me). And you're finished! Easy, right?

Notes:
I'm so in love with how this Oui yogurt jar craft came out! Despite all the waiting around I had to do to get the finished product it was surprisingly easy (and cheap!) to complete. You could easily do this with mason jars or any other glass you'd like. I have a few old salsa jars that I've cleaned and saved that I think I'm going to try this with next!
I don't plan on using these as vases, but I did try putting some water in one to see if it would take the color off the jar. And I was surprised to find out that the color stayed! I obviously wouldn't recommend drinking out of them or anything, but if you are planning to use them as pretty DIY vases I think it'll work just fine.
If you try this DIY- leave me a comment and let me know how it went! I'd love to see what colors you picked! And don't forget to pin the image below to your Pinterest board to save this easy DIY for later!
